Turtle Canyon: Boat Tour or Snorkel Tour?

Turtle Canyon boat tour or snorkel tour: guided snorkel boats, sail-and-snorkel catamarans, water-toy trips and a lunch sail, and options for riders.

Updated November 2026

Every Turtle Canyon tour is a boat tour and a snorkel tour at once: the boat anchors at the reef and you get in. What differs is the balance. Guided snorkel boats spend most of the trip at the reef with guides in the water; sail-and-snorkel catamarans give you a shorter swim and then a sail along the shore; water-toy trips add kayaks and paddleboards; and one lunch catamaran treats the swim as part of an afternoon out. If you want both the swim and the boat ride, Waikiki Sailing Company’s Hāwea does both from the sand of Waikiki Beach in two and a half hours, from $85 a person (checked November 2026).

Short, fast boats sit somewhere between: Captain Max Boat Tours spends 90 minutes with six people at most, and Pink Sails Waikiki’s two hours include 30 to 45 minutes in the water for each snorkel group.

The guided snorkel boats leave mostly from Kewalo Basin and the Hilton Lagoon; the sail-and-snorkel catamarans board on the sand of Waikiki Beach or at the Ala Wai harbor.

If you want the reef

Pick a guided snorkel boat. Living Ocean Tours stays about an hour and a half at the reef and its guides swim with the group; Island Splash Tours sends three lifeguard-certified guides in with you; Hawaii Ocean Charters keeps a guide in the water for a full hour, on a boat of 6 or 20 guests. All three promise a free return if your group sees no turtle.

If you want the boat ride

Pick a sail-and-snorkel catamaran. Waikiki Sailing Company’s Hāwea and Holokai both board on the sand of Waikiki Beach, snorkel at Turtle Canyon and then sail toward Diamond Head. Three Tiki Sailing leaves from the Ala Wai harbor and lets you bring your own drinks in its cooler. None of the three is about maximum time in the water, and only Three Tiki promises turtles.

Illustration. Turtles come up to breathe, so the people on deck see them too.

If someone in your party will not snorkel

They can still come. Green turtles surface to breathe every 15 to 30 minutes, and Hawaii’s state parks division notes that turtles can be seen from a boat when they come up, so a rider on deck often sees them too. Some boats make room for that:

  • Charter Oahu has a swim step where a non-swimmer sits with their feet in the water, and floating platforms tied off the boat. See Charter Oahu.
  • Oceanstar gives flotation gear and help in the water to weaker swimmers, and has kayaks and sea chairs for those who would rather float. See Oceanstar. Waikiki Sailing Company, Pink Sails Waikiki and Living Ocean Tours ask everyone who books to be able to swim, and GetYourGuide’s listing of Hawaii Nautical’s lunch sail is not for non-swimmers.
